Traditional Balinese dance is influence by the Hindu religion, Balinese culture and society. Dances are performed regularly throughout the Island of Bali during religious ceremonies, and social gatherings. Each dance tells a story about Balinese society and life in general. There are dances about love (Oleg Tamulilingan), anger (Teruna Jaya), nature (Cendrawasih), war (Yudha Pati) and greetings (Panyembrama, Puja Prasamya). Each dance is set to the traditional Balinese music which is performed by a gamelan orchestra (a group of mostly percussion instruments).
The typical posture of a Balinese dancer has the legs bend and the torso shifted to one side, with one elbow raised and the other lowered. Each dance step is performed with precise movements, right down to the movement of the hand, fingers and eyes. Facial expressions are an important part of the dance and help in telling the story.
